Re-learning the art of play as an adult hasn’t always been easy. When my son wants to play with me and the narrative that he has made up in his 3 year old brain makes absolutely no sense, or when I’m just really tired, or feeling uninspired, it’s hard to turn that part of my personality on. But when I can tap into some of that childlike perspective again, when I can imagine a game that he would like to play, or turn something into nothing outdoors, it’s a little bit of everyday magic. When I hear him laugh or see his wheels turning because of some imaginary scenario we’ve just invented it’s a really special part of parenthood for me. As is so often the case, I will see these types of things reflected right back at me in my work. I get to watch parents build driftwood structures with their kids on the beach, or skip stones, or pick flowers, or gather little collections of special treasures during our time together. These photos tap into another dimension of what it means to be a family photographer, and I’m just so in love with it.
